| Our Grandpa and Store Founder E.S. Good |
A friend of ours was recently rummaging through some very vintage Kewanee newspapers; and came across an article that mentioned our store founder, Grandpa E.S. Good. The date was April 5th, 1919; and the event was a reception by the local Congregational Church, honoring all men in the Service. The article made us smile; and here is an excerpt that explains why:
“Following the grand march several very novel stunts were indulged in. The first was a suit case race that was won by E.S. Good. Each man entering was given a suit case which contained bonnets, and numerous wraps, designed to meet the approval of the fair sex; and mere man had to don these and with an umbrella raised, was forced to run or hobble – as best he could – a certain distance; and the first one reaching the given point was declared the winner. The race furnished much amusement.”
We’re not quite sure when these amusing suit case races went out of fashion; but on this special occasion, we are reminded that honorably and bravely serving one’s country is still very much in fashion. A strong salute to all those, past and present, in the Service of our country on this Memorial Day 2008.
